Industrial Precision Baking with Delta Automation

Posted by Mechtric on 18th Feb 2026

In Australia’s competitive food manufacturing sector, consistency is everything. In high-volume food production, stable temperature control and precise conveyor speed management are critical to maintaining consistent product quality, optimising energy use, and maximising line efficiency.

This international bakery automation project demonstrates how Delta’s automation platform — including the Delta MS300 Variable Speed Drive (VSD) — delivers reliable, repeatable control in multi-zone industrial oven applications.

The Application: Multi-Zone Industrial Baking

The travelling oven required:

  • Four independent temperature zones

  • High initial heat to compensate for cold product and conveyor mass

  • Steam injection for crust finish

  • Three precisely controlled baking zones

  • Accurate conveyor speed control

  • A user-friendly HMI for monitoring and configuration

Maintaining stable temperature across multiple zones — while synchronising conveyor speed — was critical to achieving consistent baking results.

Delta MS300 VSD — Precision Conveyor Speed Control

At the centre of the motion control system was the Delta MS300 Series Variable Speed Drive (VSD).

The MS300 is ideal for Australian food processing and manufacturing applications due to its:

  • Compact footprint for simplified switchboard design

  • RS-485 Modbus communication for seamless system integration

  • Open-loop control for both Induction (IM) and Permanent Magnet (PM) motors

  • Built-in PLC functionality, reducing the need for additional hardware

  • Proven reliability in continuous-duty industrial environments

In this application, the MS300 monitored conveyor speed via an inductive proximity sensor. The integrated PLC continuously compared real-time feedback against the operator-set baking time from the HMI, ensuring precise dwell time control.

For operators, the process is straightforward:
Set temperature. Set time. Start production.

For engineers, the MS300 delivers stable speed regulation, reduced mechanical stress and consistent throughput.

Advanced Temperature Control Integration

To manage seven heating elements across four oven zones, Delta temperature controllers were implemented with:

  • Auto-tuning PID control for stable thermal regulation

  • PT100 temperature sensor feedback

  • Solid-state relay switching

  • Modbus communication to the HMI

  • Alarm outputs for fault monitoring

The auto-tuning function significantly reduced commissioning time and ensured optimal temperature control across a 250 kW industrial furnace operating continuously.

For Australian food manufacturers, this level of control supports:

  • Improved batch consistency

  • Reduced product waste

  • Energy optimisation

  • 24/7 operational reliability
